(San Francisco, Calif.)— Today the Yes on Prop I campaign announced that the Service Employees International Union local 1021 has endorsed Proposition I, which dedicates an existing tax on luxury real estate sales to affordable housing development and renter assistance. SEIU 1021’s 16,000 San Francisco public, education and health care workers join a growing slate of endorsers that include the United Educators of San Francisco, affordable housing developers, local elected officials and a broad coalition of community organizations which have joined the push to uphold the promises made to voters in 2020 to use the transfer tax to fund affordable housing. 

SAN FRANCISCO — In a powerful display of community mobilization, the San Francisco Affordable Housing Guarantee Act (Guarantee Act) campaign submitted more than 20,000 signatures to the San Francisco Department of Elections today to qualify for the November ballot. The campaign, which launched in May 2026, represents one of the largest and fastest grassroots signature-gathering efforts in recent San Francisco history.

SAN FRANCISCO — Mayor Daniel Lurie’s signature housing policy, the BUILD Act, quietly died this week before ever receiving a hearing, proving unviable despite the Mayor’s ironclad supermajority on the Board of Supervisors and unlimited public relations war chest. 

Median rents in San Francisco have risen approximately 30 percent over Mayor Lurie’s time in office, evictions are at a historically high level and median home prices are up 21 percent in the last year alone. San Franciscans are well aware that the housing affordability crisis is getting worse, and that giving a tax break to real estate speculators won’t deliver the affordable new housing we sorely need.
